My essay on fanfiction.
Also? Slash, if you're going to cover that, originated with Star Trek. Kurt/Spock, I think, was the first. (Got called 'slash' because of the thing between their names. XD)
Hopefully my essay helps.

And yes, this is all true. There were fanzines all over the place for stuff like Star Trek. I'm not sure if there were any before that, because the fan following for ST was obscenely huge and strong.

Also, Henry Jenkins has a lot to say about history of fan fiction in his book "Textual Poachers". I suggest you buy it.

Thanks for the help!

Go forth and read this and this and then email me with any questions you have.
Also, the Jenkins book Textual Poachers is a bit out of date for "current" stuff, but it's a good archival resource. He has something on his plate re the HP fandom, which I was interviewed for about a year ago, so keep your eye out for it in case it is released while you're working on the project.
Glad to be of help!

I am planning on contacting him, so I will definately ask him about it!
I noticed that you guys are based in Minnesota, and was curious if you live here? Because, seeing as I'm doing a movie, if you live here [in Minnesota] and would be willing, I would love to interview you on film....

I've written two papers on fanfiction, both survey papers of current (or then-current) fanfiction writers, both Tolkien-community oriented. The first one, "Does Gender Matter?" surveyed women fanfiction writers in the Tolkien community, and was written in 2003. The second one, "Under the Waterfall" surveyed members of the Henneth-Annun Story Archive and it's a more selective paper about how the writers saw themselves both within the community and also in regards to other fanfiction communities. They may not be terribly helpful, but perhaps the 'Works Consulted' lists at the end of both would be.
Best of luck; it's certainly a fascinating topic, and quite honestly may go all the way back to Arthurian stories which were retellings of popular stories. More conventionally, Star Trek fanfiction was the genesis for more modern, recognizable and trackable fanfiction.
